PhonePe Launches UPI Services in UAE for Indian Travellers: Here's How it Works

Good news for Indian travellers and NRIs in the UAE! PhonePe has launched its Unified Payments Interface (UPI) service, allowing users to make quick and easy digital payments using QR codes at shops, restaurants, and tourist attractions across the country.

How it Works:

This new feature is facilitated through Mashreq, a major bank in the UAE, and its network of Neopay terminals. Here's a breakdown of the process:
  • Scan and Pay: Simply scan the QR code displayed at participating merchants using the PhonePe app.
  • Familiar Payment Method: The transaction will be completed in Indian Rupees (INR), with the current exchange rate clearly shown for transparency.
  • NRIs Welcome: Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) can also use this service. By downloading the PhonePe app and linking their existing NRE or NRO accounts to a UAE mobile number, they can enjoy the convenience of UPI payments.

Benefits for Travellers and NRIs:

PhonePe's UPI service in the UAE offers several advantages:
  • Convenience: Make digital payments quickly and easily using your phone, just like you do in India.
  • Security: UPI transactions leverage secure technology for peace of mind.
  • Transparency: Transactions are processed in INR with the exchange rate displayed upfront.
  • Wide Acceptance: Look for the Neopay terminal at shops, restaurants, and tourist destinations.

A Collaboration for Seamless Transactions:

This initiative is a result of collaboration between PhonePe, NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL), and Mashreq bank. NIPL, the international arm of the National Payments Corporation of India, played a key role in enabling UPI acceptance on Neopay terminals.

PhonePe's expansion into the UAE signifies a growing trend of cross-border payment solutions. This service is expected to significantly enhance the payment experience for Indian travellers and the Indian diaspora residing in the UAE.
